{"id":2478,"date":"2014-09-01T10:01:57","date_gmt":"2014-09-01T17:01:57","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/alteritas.net\/GXL\/?page_id=2478"},"modified":"2023-05-28T16:33:22","modified_gmt":"2023-05-28T23:33:22","slug":"cuzins-kinship-and-cussing","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/alteritas.net\/GXL\/?page_id=2478","title":{"rendered":"Cuz\u2019ins, Kinship and Cussing"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">11 October, 2009<\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_2479\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-2479\" style=\"width: 333px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"http:\/\/alteritas.net\/GXL\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/09\/shapeimage_24.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-2479\" src=\"http:\/\/alteritas.net\/GXL\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/09\/shapeimage_24.png\" alt=\"Left to right: Farid Motahedi, George, Johnny Mack and Ben Lang\" width=\"333\" height=\"250\" srcset=\"https:\/\/alteritas.net\/GXL\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/09\/shapeimage_24.png 333w, https:\/\/alteritas.net\/GXL\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/09\/shapeimage_24-300x225.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 333px) 100vw, 333px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-2479\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Left to right: Farid Motahedi, George, Johnny Mack and Ben Lang<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>A fortuitous turn of circumstances brought Nasrin\u2019s sister Nahid and her cousin Farid and his wife to Orange County the same evening that I wa able to reunite with cousins Seattle Ben Lang and Dallasite soon-to-be San Clemente Johnny Mack (<span class=\"style_1\" style=\"font-style: italic;\">aka<\/span>\u00a0Red Dog) and his wife Karen.<\/p>\n<div class=\"style\" style=\"color: #000000;\">\n<p class=\"paragraph_style_2\">At the same time there turned up an old Tehrani school friend of Farid\u2019s, in town for the same Saturday celebration and reunion of\u00a0<a class=\"class1\" style=\"color: #000000;\" title=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Alborz_High_School\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Alborz_High_School\">Alborz College<\/a>\u00a0in Tehran that had brought Farid here and which Nasrin had\u00a0<a style=\"color: #000000;\" title=\"http:\/\/www.humanities.uci.edu\/persianstudies\/events\/\" href=\"http:\/\/www.humanities.uci.edu\/persianstudies\/events\/\">organized<\/a>\u00a0with a colleague from Oxford.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_style_2\">Nasrin had prepared the diner last Wednesday by ordering in a Persian buffet from our favorite local restaurant,\u00a0<a class=\"class2\" style=\"color: #000000;\" title=\"http:\/\/hatamcuisine.com\/\" href=\"http:\/\/hatamcuisine.com\/\">Hatam<\/a>.\u00a0 But first we had some beer and wine, plus the scrumptious Pacific Northwest salmon Ben had brought as a gift.\u00a0 Johnny Mack\u2019s jar of home-made hot sauce is waiting in the icebox for the first proper occasion.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_style_2\">I won\u2019t try to recapture all that went on in our hearts and minds, or the vibes two days later when I met Johnny Mack Dog and Ben on the beach at San Clemente.\u00a0 But perhaps something of the gist of this multicultural evening can be grasped by how we had to translate kinship terminology from Persian into English.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_style_2\">Farid is Nasrin\u2019s\u00a0<span class=\"style_1\" style=\"font-style: italic;\">pesar-khaleh<\/span>, the son of her maternal aunt, just \u201ccousin\u201d in English. But Johnny Mack and Ben, cousins in our shared notion of these things, are two different kinds of cuz in Persian. Ben, being the son of my father\u2019s brother is my\u00a0<span class=\"style_1\" style=\"font-style: italic;\">pesar-amou<\/span>. Red Dog, Johnny Mack, is son of my father\u2019s sister, so is my\u00a0<span class=\"style_1\" style=\"font-style: italic;\">pesar-ammeh<\/span>.\u00a0 I am Ben\u2019s\u00a0<span class=\"style_1\" style=\"font-style: italic;\">pesar-amou<\/span>, as he is mine, since I am related to him through the brothers of our fathers. But I am Johnny Mack\u2019s\u00a0<span class=\"style_1\" style=\"font-style: italic;\">pesar-dai<\/span>, son of his maternal uncle.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_style_2\">Now, to be sure, as Johnny Mack, observed, we Texans also have another concept of interest,\u00a0<span class=\"style_1\" style=\"font-style: italic;\">kissin\u2019 cousins<\/span>.\u00a0 We decided not to get into that discussion\u00a0nor to inquire too deep into how many other cousins there might be who were not official members of the family (no Wiki available for such Jeffersonian fine-grain, though I know they are out there).<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_style_2\">Ben wields a mean fiddle, and in various styles. The Seattle Lang\u2019s have been playing cajun music for decades now (<a style=\"color: #000000;\" title=\"http:\/\/www.myspace.com\/theriptideramblers\" href=\"http:\/\/www.myspace.com\/theriptideramblers\">The Riptide Ramblers<\/a>), and Ben has his own group,\u00a0<a style=\"color: #000000;\" title=\"http:\/\/www.trioapropos.com\/\" href=\"http:\/\/www.trioapropos.com\/\">Trio \u00e0 Propos<\/a>, which specializes in gypsy jazz and caf\u00e9 music.\u00a0 I was surprised to learn that Ben and I can speak French together.\u00a0 After a brief jam among the three of us, myself clumsily chording along, I sang the bossa nova standard \u201cManh\u00e3 de carnaval\u201d to Ben\u2019s accompaniment, and then Red Dog and Ben cut loose on the repertoire they had been working on together.\u00a0 At some point soon brother Steve, who plays in a band in Austin,\u00a0<a style=\"color: #000000;\" title=\"http:\/\/www.unlockaustin.com\/BandReviews\/Diminished 7 Band\" href=\"http:\/\/www.unlockaustin.com\/BandReviews\/Diminished%207%20Band\">The Diminished 7<\/a>, will be here for a jam with as many of the cousins as we can gather.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_style_2\">Finally, I noticed a strange thing.\u00a0 Johnny Mack and I share the same rhythms of cussing.
