{"id":2485,"date":"2014-09-01T10:36:25","date_gmt":"2014-09-01T17:36:25","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/alteritas.net\/GXL\/?page_id=2485"},"modified":"2014-09-01T10:36:44","modified_gmt":"2014-09-01T17:36:44","slug":"visiting-the-sibs","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/alteritas.net\/GXL\/?page_id=2485","title":{"rendered":"Visiting the Sibs"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">26 August, 2009<\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_2486\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-2486\" style=\"width: 346px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"http:\/\/alteritas.net\/GXL\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/09\/shapeimage_25.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-2486\" src=\"http:\/\/alteritas.net\/GXL\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/09\/shapeimage_25.png\" alt=\"The Sibs, George, Nancy, Steve, Marc\" width=\"346\" height=\"249\" srcset=\"https:\/\/alteritas.net\/GXL\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/09\/shapeimage_25.png 346w, https:\/\/alteritas.net\/GXL\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/09\/shapeimage_25-300x215.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 346px) 100vw, 346px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-2486\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The Sibs, George, Nancy, Steve, Marc<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<div class=\"style\" style=\"color: #000000;\">\n<p class=\"paragraph_style_1\" style=\"color: #00084d;\">Nasrin and I flew over to Austin for a long weekend, and by chance &#8212; that is how it felt &#8212; brother Marc was also in town after a year teaching in Manchuria.\u00a0 So the four Siblings brought to planet Earth by the conjunction of Enid, OK born John Lang and Houston, TX born Mary Maclaine were together for the first time in quite a while.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_style_1\" style=\"color: #00084d;\">The schedule was structured around visits to our Mother, who is increasingly invalid with\u00a0<a style=\"color: #6c166c;\" title=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Parkinson's_disease\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Parkinson's_disease\">Parkinson\u2019s<\/a>,\u00a0<a style=\"color: #6c166c;\" title=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Osteoporosis\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Osteoporosis\">osteoporosis<\/a>\u00a0and other afflictions relating to age.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_style_1\" style=\"color: #00084d;\">Nancy and Steve and his wife Beck bear the burden of being there full time &#8212; about which I do feel uncharacteristic twinges of guilt from time to time.\u00a0 Despite a year of serial set-backs, not all of which were the fault of the medical system, Mom is nonetheless doing better than I had imagined. Her daily care is complicated by the fact that her husband of 33 years &#8212; not our father &#8212; is himself in decline and not particularly alert to her needs.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_style_1\" style=\"color: #00084d;\">Truth be told, time with the Siblings was the real focus and joy. We spent a considerable amount of energy digging up old memories, with pointed but good humor. And like most siblings, we share a micro-culture replete with its own dense allusions and in-jokes, a kind of jargon compiled out of our common experience but also wrought in terms of a idiosyncratic syntax which allows us to construct predictable intersubjective narratives of how things work, and what is real. Our conversations are no doubt tedious and incomprehensible to outsiders.\u00a0 For us they become, on the rare occasions when we meet, the medium in which we fish once again swim.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_style_1\" style=\"color: #00084d;\">There is a second family pole in Austin, one still emerging, and its subjects are our true legacy to the future, at least in the terms which most humans place themselves in history &#8212; through family, procreation and the transmission of heritage from generation to generation.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_style_1\" style=\"color: #00084d;\">So we also made an all-too-short visit to Nancy\u2019s daughter Jennifer\u2019s home in far north Austin. Her husband Andrew was on the road from Houston, three hours away, so we missed him. \u00a0There are two siblings at this new family node (not counting here the two half-sibs whom I have not yet met). Gideon, just under four, took care to share with us his collection of toy trucks, cars and other vehicles.\u00a0 Here he was just starting out his gig as toy valet parker.<\/p>\n<div class=\"paragraph paragraph_style_1\" style=\"color: #00084d;\">\n<div class=\"tinyText style_SkipStroke_1 inline-block stroke_0\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.alteritas.net\/GL_Homepage\/Blog\/Entries\/2009\/8\/26_Visiting_the_Sibs_files\/Gideon%20cars.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p class=\"paragraph_style_1\" style=\"color: #00084d;\">Evie, here with Jennifer, was not exactly sure why we were there, and was no doubt wondering when we would leave.<\/p>\n<div class=\"paragraph paragraph_style_1\" style=\"color: #00084d;\">\n<div class=\"tinyText style_SkipStroke_1 inline-block stroke_0\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.alteritas.net\/GL_Homepage\/Blog\/Entries\/2009\/8\/26_Visiting_the_Sibs_files\/Jenn%20and%20Evie.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p class=\"paragraph_style_1\" style=\"color: #00084d;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Gideon suffers from autism but has made remarkable progress over the past several months due to a radical change in his diet, from which all gluten and casein have been eliminated. \u00a0Rather than try to explain all this myself, here is\u00a0<a class=\"class1\" style=\"color: #6c166c;\" title=\"http:\/\/www.thegfcflady.com\/\" href=\"http:\/\/www.thegfcflady.com\/\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Jennifer\u2019s blog<\/span><\/a>\u00a0on her experience and the success which the \u201cGFCF\u201d diet can bring to autistic children. \u00a0You will understand that the medical system is more or less closed off to this line of therapy, caught up in the greedy hands of corporate interests, including those specific to the medical guild itself &#8211; but this is a matter I shall leave aside here. Give it a read.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_style_1\" style=\"color: #00084d;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">As for we Senior Sibs &#8212; the youngest, Steve, was born in 1951 &#8211; we ate more than we should have from a number of food groups not all of which are good for us. A certain amount of alcohol was also consumed. Food in Austin is surprisingly good, even when grossly commercial.\u00a0 There were also practical considerations shaping the meals shared with Mom, such as the logistics of moving her around. Friday, for example, we ate at TGIF, wheelchair friendly.<\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"paragraph paragraph_style_1\" style=\"color: #00084d;\">\n<div class=\"tinyText style_SkipStroke_1 inline-block stroke_0\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.alteritas.net\/GL_Homepage\/Blog\/Entries\/2009\/8\/26_Visiting_the_Sibs_files\/Friday%27s.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><em><span class=\"style_3\">Steve, Nasrin, and Nancy, and the back of Mom\u2019s head at Friday\u2019s (at this stage of her life, one senses a certain shyness on her part about her appearance, if I can put it that way).\u00a0<\/span><\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"paragraph paragraph_style_1\" style=\"color: #00084d;\">\n<div class=\"tinyText style_SkipStroke_1 inline-block stroke_0\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.alteritas.net\/GL_Homepage\/Blog\/Entries\/2009\/8\/26_Visiting_the_Sibs_files\/Nanc%20%26%20Marc.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/div>\n<p><span class=\"style_3\" style=\"color: #000000;\"><em><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">Marilyn, Nancy and Marc, with an assortment of victuals, packages and containers. Exceptionally, Marc looks a bit like a deer caught in headlines, to use a good Texas metaphor &#8212; usually he is the headlights \ud83d\ude09\u00a0<\/span><\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p class=\"paragraph_style_1\" style=\"color: #00084d;\"><span class=\"style_3\">Mom has an astonishing appetite. She had pizza here, and lamb shanks the next noon.\u00a0 On Sunday morning Nasrin and I brought her a take-out bacon breakfast burrito from the Taqueria Aranditas on North Lamar.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_style_1\" style=\"color: #00084d;\">The Sibs\u2019 Saturday lunch was at\u00a0<a style=\"color: #6c166c;\" title=\"http:\/\/www.yelp.com\/biz\/dimassis-mediterranean-buffet-austin\" href=\"http:\/\/www.yelp.com\/biz\/dimassis-mediterranean-buffet-austin\">Dimassi\u2019s Mediterranean Buffet<\/a>, a great place to pig out, though the expression is perhaps inappropriate for a buffet which has a walled-off prayer corner oriented towards Mecca, and this on the second day of Ramadan. Yes, this is Austin, Texas.\u00a0 All of Texas but especially Austin has improved since I fled from it in 1963, one positive effect of globalization for those who are keeping score. And things will be even better in the future, or so the demographers claim, as the redneck class from which I emerged, dragging myself from the swamps, is increasingly marginalized.\u00a0 It is enough to make one believe in evolution.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_style_5\" style=\"color: #00084d;\">Eating and joking and joshing among the Sibs, plus Nasrin, and Beck when she made it, was the real joy and focus of this trip, since we were free to say whatever came into our twisted little minds. Friday night we were at\u00a0<a style=\"color: #6c166c;\" title=\"http:\/\/www.artzribhouse.com\/\" href=\"http:\/\/www.artzribhouse.com\/\">Artz Rib House<\/a>, in the famous\u00a0<a style=\"color: #6c166c;\" title=\"http:\/\/www.austinchronicle.com\/issues\/vol18\/issue14\/pols.hoodguides.html\" href=\"http:\/\/www.austinchronicle.com\/issues\/vol18\/issue14\/pols.hoodguides.html\">78704<\/a>\u00a0zip code in South Austin, \u201cwhere slackers rather than bubbas hold sway\u201d and at least some denizens subscribe to the motto \u201c<a style=\"color: #6c166c;\" title=\"http:\/\/www.dailytexanonline.com\/2.8461\/keep-austin-weird-1.984600\" href=\"http:\/\/www.dailytexanonline.com\/2.8461\/keep-austin-weird-1.984600\">keep Austin weird<\/a>\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_style_5\" style=\"color: #00084d;\">Nasrin and I had decided to spring for a real hotel for once, a old Hyatt from the 70s built around a right triangle with that classic atrium, the one right next to the\u00a0<a style=\"color: #6c166c;\" title=\"http:\/\/www.austincityguide.com\/content\/congress-bridge-bats-austin.asp\" href=\"http:\/\/www.austincityguide.com\/content\/congress-bridge-bats-austin.asp\">Congress Avenue bridge<\/a>, and also, in its own way, in the mental zone of 704.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_style_5\" style=\"color: #00084d;\">The timing and locale were excellent, since the 50th Annual\u00a0<a style=\"color: #6c166c;\" title=\"http:\/\/www.roadwayevents.com\/RoadStar\/Events-cat.asp?media1Id=1323\" href=\"http:\/\/www.roadwayevents.com\/RoadStar\/Events-cat.asp?media1Id=1323\">Austin Bat Festival<\/a>\u00a0was being celebrated Saturday on that bridge, from under which emerge at dusk millions, so I am told, of these noble mammals.<\/p>\n<div class=\"paragraph paragraph_style_6\" style=\"color: #00084d;\"><span class=\"style_2\" style=\"color: #000000;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n<p class=\"paragraph_style_5\" style=\"color: #00084d;\">Not to go on about\u00a0<a style=\"color: #6c166c;\" title=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Bat\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Bat\">bats<\/a>\u00a0&#8212; whose zoological name Chiroptera comes from two\u00a0<a style=\"color: #6c166c;\" title=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Greek_language\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Greek_language\">Greek<\/a>\u00a0words, cheir (\u03c7\u03b5\u03b9\u03c1) &#8220;hand&#8221; and pteron (\u03c0\u03c4\u03b5\u03c1\u03bf\u03bd) &#8220;wing&#8221; &#8212; but they are amazing creatures, their wings being in fact their forelimbs &#8212; they fly by flapping their hands!<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_style_5\" style=\"color: #00084d;\">After a brief stint on the bridge under a gathering thunderstorm which broke somewhere else, the five of us walked over to the\u00a0<a style=\"color: #6c166c;\" title=\"http:\/\/www.artzribhouse.com\/\" href=\"http:\/\/www.artzribhouse.com\/\">Threadgill\u2019s<\/a>\u00a0on Barton Springs Road, where I had glazed ham with jezebel sauce and black-eyed peas, legumes for which I am a sucker. Like Nasrin, I relished the sweet potato fries.\u00a0 Nancy had\u00a0<a style=\"color: #6c166c;\" title=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Tilapia\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Tilapia\">tilapia<\/a>, which got us off on a discussion about the commercialization and aquafarming of this particular species of African fish. Lost track of the other menu choices.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_style_5\" style=\"color: #00084d;\">Before turning in, we had a night cap at the bar on the way back to the Hyatt.\u00a0 There was actually a quite drinkable C\u00f4tes-du-Rhone.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_style_1\" style=\"color: #00084d;\">The last meal was an impromptu lunch Beck served us Sunday on our way to the airport, something from\u00a0<a style=\"color: #6c166c;\" title=\"http:\/\/www.souppeddler.com\/\" href=\"http:\/\/www.souppeddler.com\/\">The Soup Peddler<\/a>, another 704 institution. Followed by an even more impromptu Prosecco and a quick collective look, on Beck\u2019s laptop, at\u00a0<a style=\"color: #6c166c;\" title=\"http:\/\/www.thegfcflady.com\/\" href=\"http:\/\/www.thegfcflady.com\/\">Jennifer\u2019s website<\/a>.
