It is\u00a0intended as homage to the African power-broker matriarchs of the island of Gor\u00e9e during the 18th and 19th centuries. There is a Wiki on the subject (S<i>ignares<\/i>). More on the artist (Fabrice Monteiro) can be found in the usual ways\u00a0by \u201csearching\u201d &#8212; a term which has taken on new meaning of late.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">I didn&#8217;t realize for a day or so which bells were ringing in my mind until I recalled a piece I published in 1993, back in the days of print, in\u00a0<i>Nouvelles du Sud<\/i>\u00a0#19, \u00abLe regard de la reine: esth\u00e9tisation du d\u00e9sir politique chez Boubarcar Boris Diop\u00bb.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">In it I shed light on the Senegalese novelist Boubacar Diop&#8217;s passing allusion to Ndat\u00e9 Yallo, <i>Lingu\u00e8re<\/i> or Queen of the Kingdom of Waalo, the last bastion resisting French hegemony in the region of Senegal.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The royal traditions of the Wolof went back well before the first Portuguese merchants arrived in 1446, when there were matriarchs controlling trade roughly in the same way the <em>signares<\/em> did later.\u00a0When the last of the Wolof\u00a0<i>brak <\/i>or<i>\u00a0<\/i>king died off in 1846, power passed to the &#8220;queen&#8221; in that system of things: Ndat\u00e9 Yallo. The French were starting to flex their muscles at the time. In his novel, Boubacar Diop alluded to the myth of Ndat\u00e9 Yallo to remind his readers that although victors get to write history, for a while at least, they don&#8217;t get necessarily to write literature.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Below is a representation of Ndat\u00e9 Yallo which I had had pasted into that piece. It suggests a congruence of queenly fashion \u00a0between the Kingdom of Waalo and among the relatively independent shaker-and-mover trading women on Gor\u00e9e and thereabouts, the <em>signares<\/em>. Some of that trade was, to put a point on it, in slaves.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/alteritas.net\/GXL\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/photo-copy.jpg\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-1683\" src=\"http:\/\/alteritas.net\/GXL\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/photo-copy-200x300.jpg\" alt=\"photo copy\" width=\"200\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/alteritas.net\/GXL\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/photo-copy-200x300.jpg 200w, https:\/\/alteritas.net\/GXL\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/photo-copy.jpg 220w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 200px) 100vw, 200px\" \/><\/span><\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Twenty or even ten years ago this visual conflation and the stories behind it would have led me to another 5,000-or-so word academic publication which I would have found pleasure in composing, footnoting and even scrounging up an illustration or two from the archives for.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">That was then and this is now. Whatever stray thoughts the juxtaposition of these two images produce is enough for me these days. They have made up the matter of this afternoon, and of the text you are reading.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Yet like any reader, you can pursue either or both or even neither image in your own way and at your own behest.
