Stone bastions.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #333333;\"> Halfway I\u2019ve leaved through the old chateaux<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #333333;\"> of Provence, envied asylums astraddle<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #333333;\"> rough mounts, wondered: if not wanderlust, o scions<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #333333;\">of strife, then what itch lures us through eons<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #333333;\"> and wakes us to rout? Across the dry plateaux<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #333333;\"> of sheets wind legions amd litters which addle<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #333333;\"> the sleep, ring out camp minions\u2019 shrill paeans.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #333333;\">Since when we sleep we dream, how easy doom<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #333333;\"> in battle seems a transport, quick admission<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #333333;\"> to Elysium, free of scheme and schism.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #333333;\">Pilgrims lurching to our own tombs,<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #333333;\"> in journey\u2019s trance we hallow our submission<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #333333;\"> to boundary, custom and ism.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #333333;\">***<\/span><\/p>\n<p><em><span style=\"color: #333333;\">Another sonnet from the Berkeley period, this one dedicated to a friend in tirade and despair. Neil and I shared a fascination with how far human cruelty can go, and how blindly we remain attached to the narrow worlds into which we are born.
