Hafez has a special place in the hearts of literate Persian speakers, since his writing is so entwined in their lives, essentially because of the custom of divining the future by opening a page at random and interpreting it in terms of ones immediate situation (f\u0101l-e h\u0101fez\u00a0<\/span><\/em>\u0641\u0627\u0644 \u062d\u0627<\/span><\/span>\u0641\u0638<\/span><\/span>\u200e<\/span>).\u00a0In fact, this very text could be asked<\/span><\/em>\u00a0whether it should be translated, a privilege accorded very few others..<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n

I came to it without any hocus-pocus. Nasrin Rahimieh asked me to translate its first two lines to use as an epigraph to her book on Persian travelers, <\/span><\/em>Missing Persians<\/a><\/span>. I had always promised myself to return to the whole ghazal<\/a> and was spurred to do so by an invitation to talk about translation theory and translation studies at a one day conference\u00a0on <\/span><\/em>Literary Translation in Iran<\/span><\/a> at UC-Irvine in December.<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n

For those interested, I have posted the Handout<\/a> with references and link to the Powerpoint I’ll be using for that talk. Much of what I’ve said about the first two lines applies to the rest of my translation. The original Persian with a transcription follows.\u00a0<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n

Grieve not! Joseph gone astray
\n<\/span>will find his way to Canaan.
\nFrom the cell where sorrows dwell
\nwill spring a stand of flowers.<\/p>\n

O grieving heart, do not despair,

\nThese frenzied thoughts will
\ncalm and still. Grieve not!<\/p>\n

If life comes like Spring to grace
\nthe green throne of meadows
\nyou will bear a crown of flowers.

Distant spheres turn not around
\n<\/span>our fleeting daily wants.
\nSteady states of time do
\n<\/span>not abide. So grieve not!<\/p>\n

Do not abandon hope. Hidden
\n<\/span>games play out behind an opaque
\nscreen. What can’t be seen
\nremains unknown. Grieve not!<\/p>\n

O heart, should a deluge wash away
\n<\/span>the fundaments of being,
\ngrieve not, if Noah’s at the helm
\nto steer your bark through storm.<\/p>\n

Crossing the scorching desert,
\n<\/span>yearning to reach the Ka\u2019aba,
\ngrieve not, though thistles
\n<\/span>score you with their thorns<\/p>\n

Home is fraught with danger,
\njourney\u2019s end out of grasp.
\nGrieve not! No path exists
\n<\/span>which does not reach an end.<\/p>\n

We are exiled from friends, cut off
\n<\/span>and riven by our rivals\u2019 threats.
\nBut grieve not. God alone knows how
\n<\/span>the spheres will set our fate.<\/p>\n

O Hafez, trapped in poverty,
