The instant forging of the bond between us was that I knew something about his native Portuguese creole language and that I cited a proverb from Haitian creole.<\/i><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000080;\"><i>he and I were speaking French at the time and, telling him I was hungry, I turned to the Haitian proverb\u00a0<\/i>Sak vid pa debou<i>\u00a0(An empty sack cannot stand \u00a0up). There \u00a0is apparently an equivalent in Guinea-Bissau Crioulo.<\/i><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000080;\"><i>He recently asked me via Instagram if I could write him a letter of invitation for a visit to the US. \u00a0Diasporans and the otherwise exiled, refugees economic or not, will know how important that is.<\/i><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000080;\"><i>Here is my reasoned response, in rather stilted Portuguese.<\/i><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">*<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u00c9 uma \u00e9poca terr\u00edvel para vir para os EUA. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Por causa de cobi\u00e7a, provavelmente voc\u00ea ficaria em quarentena por 14 dias \u00e0s suas custas.
