Real, too,<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\"> the mosque behind and, still behind,<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\"> the vacant lots which pock this flattened<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\"> site of another epic battle for Jaffa.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\"> Tel Aviv&#8217;s U.N.E.S.C.O-prized White City<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\"> is crumbling back to ochre, its stacks<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\"> of curve-cornered Bauhaus stucco cubes<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\"> remnants of pre-Shoah social Zionism lodged<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\"> on a shore of Canaan, against which<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\"> a nervous sea hurls roiling rows of surf<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\"> which curl and crash and surge, subsiding<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\"> in foam, as waves do, human or not.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>*<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-left\">This poem was the result of a trip to Tel-Aviv in 2009.
