{"id":905,"date":"2014-08-24T09:15:19","date_gmt":"2014-08-24T16:15:19","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/alteritas.net\/pastis\/?page_id=905"},"modified":"2018-09-27T22:22:12","modified_gmt":"2018-09-28T05:22:12","slug":"the-giraffes-at-san-gorgonio","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/alteritas.net\/pastis\/inventory\/the-giraffes-at-san-gorgonio\/","title":{"rendered":"Giraffes at San Gorgonio"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The moon is warm tonight, not breeze<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\"> enough to stir the vanes of the wind mills<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\"> grouped in groves of their own out beyond<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\"> the manicured lawns and stands of palms<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\"> which ring this landscaped spa oasis.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">I take them first as sunflowers, basking<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\"> in a pewter glow, swinging toward<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\"> not light but the slightest waft, their roots<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\"> seeking the moisture said to seep along<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\"> the fault deep under this parched basin.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Then before me there prances among<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\"> the baobabs on the dessicated bed<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\"> of some Lake Chad\u00a0a herd of giraffes,<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\"> their graceful gait stirring flocks up into<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\"> fluttering flight,\u00a0the piebald quilts of their<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">dappled hides furling like ships\u2019 sails,<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\"> spangles on water where there is none.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\"> As they lope, they dream of other giraffes<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\"> inscrutable dreams I can never know<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\"> even as vaguely as I know my own.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Today you looked especially sad, pale<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\"> arms clasped to your calves.\u00a0<i>Hush<\/i>, I said.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\"> <i>No tears here!
