Stone bastions.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\">Halfway I\u2019ve leaved through the old chateaux<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\">of Provence, envied asylums astraddle<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\">rough mounts, wondered: if not wanderlust, o scions<br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">of strife, then what itch lures us through eons<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\">and wakes us to rout? Across the dry plateaux<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\">of sheets wind legions and\u00a0litters which addle<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\">the sleep, ring out camp minions\u2019 shrill paeans.<br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Since when we sleep we dream, how easy doom<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\">in battle seems a transport, quick admission<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\">to Elysium, free of scheme and schism.<br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Pilgrims lurching toward our own tombs,<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\">in journey\u2019s trance we hallow our submission<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\">to boundary, custom and ism.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">*<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\"><em><span class=\"s1\">Neil Worth, a dear friend during my Berkeley years, loved this poem I wrote for him. It begins with an echo of Osip #Mandelstam&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/classical-inquiries.chs.harvard.edu\/insomnia-homer-taut-sails-by-osip-mandelshtam\/\">Insomnia.
