One of Heine’s songs from his<\/em> Buch der Lieder\u00a0(1827). There is an air of “been there done that” in it. But the utter simplicity of its form and language nudges the apparent banality of events to where Heine wanted us to go, back to the deep sorrow of youthful love, sad enough when we are living it, perhaps even sadder when we have left it long behind.\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n

\nThe first young man broke down.<\/p>\n

Such an old story, though
\nit always feels new.
\nThose to whom it happens
\n\u2014 their hearts are torn in two.<\/p>\n
