Mit Fl\u00fcgel-Schl\u00e4gen,<br \/>\n<\/em><em>mit Fernen selber r\u00fchren wir uns an.<br \/>\n<\/em><em>Ein Dichter einzig lebt, und dann und wann<br \/>\n<\/em><em>kommt, der ihm tr\u00e4gt, dem, der ihn trug, entgegen.<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">*<\/p>\n<p><i>Like the gods of classical mythology, the poets who hold congress in our hearts and minds play out sometimes confounded dramas, this one a painful <\/i>m\u00e9nage \u00e0 trois<i>.<\/i><\/p>\n<p><i>Fully aware that Boris Pasternak, the author of <\/i>Doctor Zhivago<i>, was his equal in writing and, he feared, in love, Rilke penned this entreaty to Marina\u00a0<em>Tsvetaeva\u00a0<\/em>in which he cast her as his own equal, the beating wings implying she too was a poetic angel, a favorite image of the German.<\/i><\/p>\n<p><i>In the exquisitely tortuous grammar of his last line in German, it is not absolutely clear who brought what to whom, since Rilke followed the convention that poets are male.
