As here in the text beneath<br \/>\nthe fluff, tenuous tokens on a vacant<br \/>\ncerulean sphere whose grand nebulous<br \/>\nmesh\u2019s measure cannot be captured in<br \/>\nintegers, the fugitive traces thought leaves.<br \/>\nBitter chill, numbing smell, sharpens sound,<br \/>\ndeprives us of dimension, laying space bare.<br \/>\nAnd bareness is all we need, the scarce coin<br \/>\nof our rich empty inner kingdom.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">*<\/p>\n<p><i>An academic poem in the sense that it takes or rather took place in a graduate seminar in comparative literature, and in a specific time and place, 1969 in the Old Power Plant at the University of Alberta in Edmonton.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0The professor was my eventual \u00a0<\/span><\/i><span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">Doctorvater<\/span><i><span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">, <a href=\"https:\/\/es.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Joan_Ferrat\u00e9\">Juan Ferrat\u00e9<\/a>.<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><i>It was mid-winter and the steam rising up from the operational part of building itself into a pure blue winter sky was buffeted about by breezes, alternatively casting the second floor seminar room into shade and letting in bright shafts of sun.<\/i><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Making Nothing Happen &#8211; <em>See Auden&#8217;s &#8220;In Memory of W.B. Yeats&#8221;: &#8220;poetry makes nothing happen &#8230;.&#8221;<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Vapourising<i> &#8211; Note the Canadian spelling. In 1969 Canadian English was more distinct from American spelling and especially pronunciation norms than today.<\/i><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Twenty below<i> &#8211; At the time of writing, this would have meant -20 Farenheit, not celsius. Roughly -29 c. Canada did not go even partially metric until 1974.<\/i><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Seminar &#8211; <em>a loaded word in this context, given Plato&#8217;s position that perceptual realities are like shadows cast on the wall of essences which lie behind our backs.<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Gitanes bleues<i> &#8211; Professor Ferrat\u00e9 would work his way through at least one flat pack of these French cigarettes per three hour seminar. There were ashtrays in all classrooms. There were thus parallel swirls of smoke inside and steam outside.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/i><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Hold in abeyance<i> &#8211; a nuance of <\/i><a style=\"color: #000080;\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Roman_Jakobson\"><i>Roman Jakobson<\/i><\/a><i>\u2019s poetic theory, which defines \u00a0<\/i><a style=\"color: #000080;\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Literariness\"><i>literariness<\/i><\/a><i>\u00a0as the temporary suspension of reference to the content of words in order to appreciate the their arrangement. In this sense, all poetry is concrete poetry.<\/i><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000080;\">As here in the text<i> &#8211; reference back to the text before the reader\u2019s own eyes, which is likened to evaporating puffs of steam against an azure sky, itself an allusion to Mallarm\u00e9\u2019s poem on the difficulties of poetry, <\/i><a style=\"color: #000080;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.poetica.fr\/poeme-144\/stephane-mallarme-azur\/\"><i>L\u2019azur<\/i><\/a><i>.<\/i><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Grand nebulous \/ mesh\u2019s measure<i> &#8211; De Saussure\u2019s <\/i>grande n\u00e9buleuse<i> referred to the absolute infinity of meaning in the total world of signs (tokens).<\/i><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Cannot be captured in integers &#8211; <em>A hint of <a style=\"color: #000080;\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Chaos_theory\">chaos theory<\/a>, in terms of which dimensions are fractal, fractions rather than whole numbers.<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Deprives us of dimension, laying space bare &#8211;<em> Can there be space without dimension or dimension without space?<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000080;\">The scarce coin\u00a0of our rich empty inner kingdom &#8211; <em>Can the kingdom within a poem be thought of as rich and empty at the same time?<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p><em style=\"color: #000080; font-size: 1rem;\">This is what I call a mute sonnet, fourteen unrhymed lines more or less respecting the structure of a sonnet.\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000080;\"><i>There is a background blog piece (<\/i><a style=\"color: #000080;\" href=\"https:\/\/alteritas.net\/GXL\/?page_id=2490\"><i>Edmonton is Fun After All<\/i><\/a><i>) which might shed more light on the poem.<\/i><\/span><\/p>\n<!-- AddThis Advanced Settings generic via filter on the_content --><!-- AddThis Share Buttons generic via filter on the_content -->","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Steam from the power plant, vapourising at twenty below, casts turbulent shadows into the seminar, obscuring smoke swirling from the tips of\u00a0Gitanes bleues.
