An early passage in chapter III brought to mind my own &#8220;Epitaph\u201d, written years ago in my dark, middle period in Berkeley.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><i>Montaigne was citing no less than Plato, albeit in Latin (Phaedrus, LXIV)<\/i><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">Le soin des fun\u00e9railles, le choix de la s\u00e9pulture, la pompe des obs\u00e8ques servent plus \u00e0 consoler les vivants qu\u2019\u00e0 secourir les morts<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">curatio funeris, conditio sepultur\u00e6, pompa exequiarum, magis sunt uiuorum solatia, quam subsidia mortuorum<\/p>\n<p><i>To wit: The pomp and circumstances of a funeral console the living rather than the dead<\/i><\/p>\n<!-- AddThis Advanced Settings generic via filter on the_content --><!-- AddThis Share Buttons generic via filter on the_content -->","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I want no stone nor gilded urn for I reside beyond retrieve.
