Real, too,<br \/>\n<\/span>the mosque behind and, still behind,<br \/>\nthe vacant lots which pock this flattened<br \/>\nsite of another epic battle for Jaffa.<br \/>\nTel Aviv\u2019s U.N.E.S.C.O-prized White City<br \/>\nis crumbling back to ochre, its stacks<br \/>\nof curve-cornered Bauhaus stucco cubes<br \/>\nremnants of pre-Shoah social Zionism lodged<br \/>\non a shore of Canaan, against which<br \/>\na nervous sea hurls roiling rows of surf<br \/>\nwhich curl and crash and surge, subsiding<br \/>\nin foam, as waves do, human or not.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">*<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000080;\"><em>Now a strangely topical poem, but one written in 2009 during a visit to Tel-Aviv. <span style=\"font-size: 1rem;\">My attention was attracted by the <\/span><\/em><em><span style=\"font-size: 1rem;\">above grafitto, itself a kind of concrete poem of phatic permutation, upon which topic I published my first critical piece lo! many ages ago.
