Loud as a plane overhead he heard
his own thought pass. No déjà-vu,
no pious rapture, just plain noise
he could not shut out. Like a garbage
truck, a neighbor’s saw, sirens
at whose shrill pitch like a leashed
dog he felt himself screech and howl.
