Heine’s Old Story

One of Heine’s songs from his Buch der Lieder (1827). There is an air of “been there done that” in it. But the utter simplicity of its form and language nudges the apparent banality of events to where Heine wanted us to go, back to the deep sorrow of youthful love, sad enough when we are living it, perhaps even sadder when we have left it long behind.

Schumann put this to music, capturing the tension between hackneyed and genuine emotion: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JVtJgdekd3E

A young man loved a woman
who preferred another man.
That one in turn yearned
for another woman’s hand.

So the first woman, on the rebound,
donned a veil and gown
with the next man in her path.
The first young man broke down.

Such an old story, though
it always feels new.
Those to whom it happens
— their hearts are torn in two.

After Heinrich Heine

Ein Jüngling liebt ein Mädchen,
Die hat einen andern erwählt;
Der andre liebt eine andre,
Und hat sich mit dieser vermählt.

Das Mädchen heiratet aus Ärger
Den ersten besten Mann,
Der ihr in den Weg gelaufen;
Der Jüngling ist übel dran.

Es ist eine alte Geschichte,
Doch bleibt sie immer neu;
Und wem sie just passieret,
Dem bricht das Herz entzwei.
