The Canadian Poet Albert Lozeau

The Canadian poet Albert Lozeau, who died a century ago on this date lived a life too short and painful to have rivaled the great Émile Nelligan (1879-1941), who has been often likened to Arthur Rimbaud and who bore sufferings of his own. I was delighted in 1987 when the Sherbrooke-based poetry review asked me to translate two of his poems. The first, above, was renewing itself in my mind as I flew back to Ottawa for the first time in almost five years, in the autumn of 2014.

It was late afternoon and the sun had slipped behind a veil of cirrus off to the west. As the little Embraer cut a slow arc east, there was a splendid view of the confluence of the Rideau River and, on the opposite shore in Québec, the Gatineau, both emptying into the Ottawa itself. It was a week too early for most leaves to turn, but a few trees below were touched with scarlet. For me, these sere tokens of memory were enough to evoke realms of blazing experience left behind, though the autumn’s full radiance was yet to come.

The French is available if you Duckduck “Erable rouge” + Lozeau.

Bonne St-Jean à toutes et tous.

Mezcal !!!

Mezcal

PALOMO CON MOLE MEZCAL 700ML NOM O724X
100% MAGUEY/ESPADIN AGAVE

Produced in Santiago Matatlan, Oaxaca, Mexico, this Palomo mezcal is made from ripe agaves, baked underground for five days, milled by horse-drawn tahona, fermented with natural yeast in wooden tinas and double-distilled. For the third distillation, a four-week maceration with 30 mole ingredients takes place. Citrus in the nose with hints of chili spice, nuts, cacao. The palate reiterates the nose with spice, chocolate, nuts, vegetal mint, light smoke

Distilled by Victor, this is the first batch of tobalá made from plants cultivated beside the family’s ranch. Despite some popular myths, tobalá take to cultivation, and the plants reached maturity after just six years, as opposed to 12 years when harvested in the wild from the nearby mountains. Both nose and palate are clean and uplifting, with hints of fine smoke, minerality, leather, baked pear and mown grass. Very sippable.

Handcrafted in small batches by fourth-generation mezcaleros, Ilegal’s Joven, Reposado, and Anejo mezcals are all made with 100% Espadín agave, double distilled in the Santiago Matatlan Valley of Oaxaca, Mexico.

Nose: caramelized pear, orange zest, light smoke, toasted agave.
Palate: Butterscotch, agave, brown spices, cinnamon, brown sugar.

What I like about the Chinese is how perfunctory and businesslike, almost professional, they are about transactions.

Seamlessness of its irrefutabilty makes it ideological

I recently changed my Twitter bio adding “pacifist”.  Let me explain.

I find myself on a #beats  binge, which astounds me. It  shouldn’r, since there was a time when I was tempted by the ethos of the #Beats.   It turns out that my peak of adolescent revolt was pre-#Hippie but  was “Not So Beat Either”.

 Chiste triste

In that forest too sad for birds,
the women have nothing but color.
They squat by the road in indigo skirts,
wrapped in rainbow shawls.
The court-yards of tourist hotels
hold flocks of wing-clipped macaws.
In their cages, too sad for words,
the quetzals are nothing but color.

Leftists are losers  I say this as a bona fide left Social Democrat, a Menchevik of sorts.

Natch, as a PwP I’m intrinsically involved with understanding what it is.

I’ve rediscovered what it means to listen actively to music. I had always thought that KJazz 88.1  KKJZ was a local resource, for background radio for driving around OC. But it can be streamed at  jazzandblues.org. Duh!.

Jazz quote:

One thing that works for me with jazz is the aura of literacy that hangs about it, the hidden lyrics in the case of instrumentals. Part of the mysterious appeal of it is due to the infuence of so much matrrial from the Great American songbook.

I for one hold to that creed, the one which holds that poetry has no place in politics and vice versa. But is there not a contradiction jbetween exempting poetry from political judgement while at the same time you  insist that xxx
